We’re Brad and Hayley, a 30-year-old husband and wife duo who have been travelling in our 4WD and off-road caravan since 2022. The idea was initially to go on a one year lap, but as we started saving and planning, we quickly realised that one year wouldn’t be enough. Four years later and we're still going, and now see this as our long-term lifestyle. We initially saved enough money to get us through a year on the road, then we stopped to work normal jobs (teaching and truck driving) when the money ran low. The whole time we documented our journey and shared videos showcasing our travels. Over time the “Our Australia Trip” community grew online, and these days we’re lucky enough to call making travel videos our full-time job.
We’ve been to so many epic places over the years, from tackling Cape York, crossing the Nullarbor 3 times, the Gibb River Road twice, visiting Australia’s most remote town, exploring the Whitsunday’s and even taking our caravan down to the snow for a season. But there’s still so much more of Australia for us to see, and already so many favourite places we can’t wait to go back to. No matter how long you travel Australia for, you truly will never see it all!
We're pretty ordinary people, we just decided to live an extraordinary life, and we reckon anyone can do the same if they want it too.
Q: You’re living what’s considered a dream lifestyle by other people - is it courage, craziness or something else that took your family down this trail?
A: We think it’s a bit of both that lead us to this lifestyle. Sure you need to be a little bit crazy to sell nearly all of your possessions and hit the road. Plus you need a bit of courage to endure the less glamorous side of this life but overall it's an alternate way of living and for us, it would be very hard to go back to a normal life now.
Q: Favourite camp spot that you wish you never told anyone about?
A: We’re super open to sharing camps with other travellers, simply because 99% of places we camp can be easily found on wikicamps. Unfortunately our favourite camps are currently closed due to cyclone damage on the Ningaloo - South Lefroy, North Lefroy and Winderabandi.
Q: If you had to choose… would it be an overnight camp in croc territory, or midge territory…
A: Croc country every day of the week 😅 We have had some shocking nights in places that we (unknowingly) camped with midges.
Q: What’s your biggest camping fail?
A: Geez, we’ve had a few, the most recent one that comes to mind is burning through our food supplies because we took an extra few weeks to cross the gibb. We had so many nights eating baked beans and damper for dinner.
We also banked on catching fish, and ended up not catching a single meal of fish.. 😂
Q: Just saying yes and starting is sometimes the biggest hurdle. Any tips for couples dreaming of this lifestyle but no idea where to start?
A: Our best advice is to make a plan and stick to it. For us, setting a leaving date that was reasonable to achieve was what we needed to take the plunge. We also told everyone we knew that we were doing this trip and leaving on our set date. Even though we still didn’t feel “ready” when that date came around, we just hitched up because we committed to it, and didn't look back.
